    The setting: baseball's first ballpark with a retractable dome and a natural grass field. A crowd of 50,179 is on hand, and the Arizona Diamondbacks are on the field. National League baseball has arrived in the Grand Canyon State.
It's Tuesday, March 31, 1998, and Arizona right-hander Andy Benes has just uncorked the first pitch in Diamondbacks' history. The batter is Mike Lansing of the Colorado Rockies, the home plate umpire is Jim Quick and the pitch is a ball. Arizona will keep the game close and trail by only 3-1 through 6 innings. But the Rockies will score 5 times in the seventh en route to a 9-2 victory. Other Diamondbacks on the field for the historic moment are Jorge Fabregas (C), Travis Lee (1B), Edwin Diaz (2B), Jay Bell (SS), Matt Williams (3B), Brent Brede (LF), Devon White (CF) and Karim Garcia (RF).
