The "Impossible Dream" season of 1967 culminated with the Red Sox facing off with the St Louis Cardinals in the World Series. The Red Sox, managed by Dick Williams, were led by Triple Crown winner and A.L. MVP Carl Yastrzemski, A.L. Cy Young Award winner Jim Lonborg and Rookie of the Year runner-up Reggie Smith. Tied with, and playing against, the Minnesota Twins going into the last game of the season, Yastrzemski had 4 hits, including a clutch bases-loaded single and also made an accurate throw to cut down a runner attempting to advance into scoring position. Yaz's performance combined with Lonborg's gutsy complete game pitching effort to clinch the pennant for the Boston faithful, their first since 1946.
